15. Epilogue

The little town of Kelowna is buzzing. I love these outdoor parties – the sort where children have a field day, running all over the place while their parents chat to one another. The celebrations are rustic, without pretension, but the mayor knows how to take care of his citizens. My parents are a bit like royalty, having their moment of glory. They've always lived in Kelowna and have become, along with their store, emblematic figures in the town, always very involved in and concerned by the town. Today Kelowna, the mayor, the councilors, and all the inhabitants, are paying homage to them by giving them the freedom of the town. I watch them coming and going, shaking hands, laughing. My mother is definitely a queen for the day, and she's making the most of it. Even my father, usually so discreet, is letting himself go a bit.

Adam, Ryan, Claire, and I have made the journey to attend. Well, my mother didn't exactly leave us much choice. This little trip means Adam and I can get away from the turmoil caused by Lorraine's arrest and the closing down of the Hill company. The investigation is well under way and journalists are still looking to fill column inches. But even if we're still under the spotlight and Adam is still very much in demand, it's nothing compared to what we've already been through. We hardly leave each other's sides now, and are always happy and eager to see each other. There are no more barriers, I'm no longer anxious, and there's nothing else stopping us from living our relationship to the full.

These last two weeks I've learned how to be happy again. Though the first few days I still woke up worried for Adam, my brother, Claire, my parents, and all my loved ones. Little by little the worry lifted and disappeared completely. I moved into Adam's and soon settled in. Claire didn't mind – she knew we wouldn't be roommates forever. But we see each other regularly again for girls' nights. For the first time since I arrived in San Francisco, I can take care of my brother and take an interest in his studies. The project to create a Philharmonic orchestra in San Francisco has been made official, and the auditions will begin soon. I've been reunited with my violin, my Stradivarius, and nothing else is standing in the way of my progress.

I feel like I'm walking on air.

"You look very pensive, babe," murmurs Adam into my ear.

His eyes are warm and enveloping. His face is relaxed, serene. All I need to be happy is to be by his side. This man who is so attractive, so charming, so humble, who inspires so much confidence in me... I still tremble when I smell his odor, and my body comes to life when he touches me...
